Does Windows Search rehydrate PeerGFS's edge files?
Question
When using Edge Caching in PeerGFS, will Windows Search rehydrate stub files at the edge?
Answer
Windows Search has a few modes of operation, as shown here:
If the Windows Search service is running and File contents is selected while searching a UNC path to a directory of PeerGFS stub files, Windows Search may force the rehydration of some stub files. Similarly, if the Windows Search service is running and Zipped (compressed) folders is selected, stubbed files may be rehydrated.
Unfortunately, these behaviors are controlled by Windows Search. While PeerGFS can be configured to avoid rehydration of any files touched via UNC path, doing so could negatively impact normal user activity such as opening Microsoft Office documents, and is not recommended.
